massif of which the burnt-out Santa Maria (6,255 ft.) and
the gently active Rincón de la Vieja (6,220 ft.) that
last erupted in November 1995, are the highest volcanoes.

Day 1
San José - Rincón de la Vieja - (D)
In the morning, pick up at your city hotel in San José and seat-in transfer northbound on the Interamericana arriving in the early afternoon at a rustic mountain lodge at the foot of the volcanic hills. Free time before dinner, to explore the surroundings and enjoy the sunset at a look out point near the lodge which provides a 360 degree panoramic view of the area, including Rincon de la Vieja & Santa Maria volcanoes, the lowlands of Guanacaste with its tropical dry forests, pasture lands and the Pacific coastal lines.

Day 2
Rincón de la Vieja - One Day Multi-Sport Adventure - (BF,L,D)
After breakfast, a full day of adventures begins: Choose from the following activities and participate in as many as you can in one day:
"The Canyon Tour", an exciting tour through the "Kazm Cañon", a majestic canyon made by the erosion of the Blanco River during millions of years. The tour includes canopy zip lines, rappeling, rock climbing, tarzan swings, via ferrata and hanging bridges.
Horseback riding to the waterfalls – e.g. Las Chorreras or La Oropendula, La Victoria
Azufrales Hot Springs at Rincon de la Vieja National Park
Rio Negro Tubing Adventure (class II & IV)

Day 3
Hike to the Crater of Rincón de la Vieja Volcano - (BF,BL,D)
Early ascent to Rincón de la Vieja's crater (about 6 hours); 3,940 ft. / 1200 m of height are to be covered. The highlight of this strenuous full day hike is not only the crater itself but the different life zones resulting from the changes in altitude that we cross. The views are spectacular: on clear days you will be able to see the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean, as well as the Nicaragua Lake. The final ascent is over exposed lava rock, climbing steeply and often in the clouds. On some days, because of strong winds up there, we may have to return before reaching the summit. On our way we will have a picnic lunch.

Back to San José or Continue to your next destination - (BF)
Pick up at the hotel and seat-in Shuttle Transfer back to San Jose.
