Day 1

SAN JOSÉ – ARENAL VOLCANO / HOT SPRINGS ECOTERMALES - (D)
Transfer by comfortable shuttle bus from San José to La Fortuna (pick up from other destinations also possible). In the early afternoon, pick up at your hotel to explore the Silencio Trail with a local guide and hike through the rainforest at the foot of Arenal Volcano where you have the possibility of spotting monkeys and a large variety of birds, including toucans and trogons. You will end the hike with a refreshing beverage and a magnificent view of Arenal Volcano, where, with a bit of luck, you can see one of the fascinating eruptions of red, flowing lava. Arenal Volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in the Americas - you might even feel the ground rumble. This stunning experience is followed by an evening at the hot springs of Ecotermales, to enjoy a soothing bath of waterfalls and natural pools of various temperatures against the backdrop of fresh nighttime air and a starry sky, all within lush, tropical gardens. Keep a lookout throughout the evening, in case that sky explodes with hot showers of red, yellow and orange, the sparkling lava flows of Arenal Volcano. Dinner at the Hot Springs. Return to your hotel at approx. 09:30 pm.

Day 2

CAÑO NEGRO WILDLIFE REFUGE - (BF,BL)
Early morning pick up at your hotel (approx. 7:30 am) for a two hour drive to the north, to Caño Negro. The Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge and the Rio Frio are some of the most biologically diverse wetland areas in Costa Rica and some of the richest wildlife viewing and birding sites on this continent. This trip is a great variation from the normal Caño Negro day trip. Explore the refuge by canoe, and then paddle our canoes down the Rio Frio or Rio los patos. Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge has an extension of about 10,000 hectares and is of interest especially to bird-watchers, but not only. It is also remarkable for its large population of endangered mammals, including jaguars, tapirs, and ocelots. There are always plenty of monkeys around. Crocodiles and caimans are easily seen. Following a Picnic-Lunch, we continue by canoe, then return by bus to La Fortuna, arrival at approx. 6:00 p.m.

Day 3

BACK TO SAN JOSE - (BF)
Return to San José or an alternative destination per shuttle bus.
